History:
Camus is the fifth-largest cognac house and the largest family-owned cognac company. It was founded in 1863 by winemaker Jean-Baptiste Camus, who organized a group of producers to sell cognac under a single name, "La Grande Marque." He later added his own name to the brand. Despite its size, Camus remains a family business, with Cyril Camus, the great-grandson of Jean-Baptiste, in charge of the company.
Five Generations:
Jean-Baptiste Camus (1835–1901) was an independent winemaker and distiller. He originally sold cognac to larger houses until, in 1863, he formed a consortium to produce and market cognac under the name "La Grande Marque." Later, he bought out his partners' shares to establish Camus La Grande Marque as a family-owned business
Brothers Edmond (1859–1933) and Gaston Camus (1865–1945) were the sons of Jean-Baptiste. Edmond, the elder son, joined the company as Master Blender in 1894. He boosted quality and innovation and was one of the first to sell cognac in labeled bottles instead of barrels. His younger brother, Gaston, joined the company in 1896 and drastically improved export sales, particularly to Russia, where Camus became the official cognac of the court of the last Tsar.
Michel Camus (1911–1985) joined the company in 1932 when he was only 21 years old and is known for establishing Camus’ significant duty-free business in the 1960s, particularly by creating gift sets featuring Limoges porcelain and Baccarat crystal decanters. He was the first to promote high-quality Napoleon cognac in a signature frosted bottle.
Jean-Paul Camus (born in 1945) joined the company in 1977 to assist his father as Master Blender. Focusing primarily on Borderies, he acquired new vineyards, distilleries, and increased the house’s storage capacity. Like his father, Michel, he focused on duty-free sales and the Asia-Pacific region. Camus Napoleon became the best-selling cognac in Japan.
Cyril Camus (born in 1971) completed his business degree at Babson College in the U.S. before joining Camus in 1994 as Director of Commercial Relations for the company in Beijing, China. He returned to Cognac in 1998 as Marketing Director and developed the Borderies XO, one of the house's signature products. He became President in 2004, succeeding his father, and later developed the Camus Elegance line.
